Representatives of the Brest City Organization of OSVOD discussed water safety measures during the winter and spring with students. In our country, this issue becomes especially pressing in winter and spring, when weather conditions require special attention and caution from everyone. The goal of the event is to raise public awareness of ice and water safety rules, prevent accidents, and teach first aid to victims.
Inga Grigoryevna Yakush, Chair of the Brest City Organization of OSVOD, shared the grim statistics of drownings, including falls into water, in the Brest Region and the city of Brest: in 2026, one case (fall into water) was recorded in the city of Brest, and four in the Brest Region. It's important to note that drownings occur not only in bodies of water and swimming pools, but also in bathtubs.
Aleksandr Viktorovich Segenyuk, head of the OSVOD search and rescue team, presented a brief outline of what to do in the event of a drowning, as well as when a drowning person is found. He demonstrated the proper use of a life jacket and emphasized the necessity and importance of wearing one when going out on ice, engaging in winter sports, boating, and so on.
Igor Sergeyevich Denisyuk, a nurse with the search and rescue team, practiced a resuscitation procedure for victims in water using a training mannequin. He shared important recommendations that, if followed correctly, can mechanically restore blood circulation, maintaining oxygen delivery to the brain and vital organs (ensuring ~30% of cardiac output) until paramedics arrive. The ability to independently perform cardiac massage on a training mannequin was of particular interest to those present.
Informed presentations and helpful recommendations from experts will help each of us improve our own safety and preparedness in emergency situations. Following basic safety rules can prevent accidents and save lives.
