HELLO, KOLYMA!

Oleg Pavlovich Meshik, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Systems and Ecology at BrSTU, took part in the International Scientific Field Expedition and Ecological and Geographical Survey of the Natural Areas of the Kolyma Region and the Northern Coast of the Sea of Okhotsk (Magadan Oblast, Russian Federation).

The expedition team conducted a large-scale ecological and geographic survey of the unique natural complexes of northeastern Russia. In the harsh permafrost conditions, specialists collected data on the condition of landscapes, soils, and surface and groundwater in the region. Particular attention was paid to the dynamics of flora and fauna under the influence of climatic, cryogenic, and anthropogenic changes.

Key objectives of the mission:

Assess the impacts of natural and anthropogenic changes, the effectiveness of ongoing reclamation measures, and the need for their further implementation;

Exchange of best practices in the design, operation, and environmental management of drainage systems;

Use of the obtained results and practical experience to adapt and implement innovative technologies and management solutions in the Magadan Region and the Republic of Belarus.

The participation of the BrSTU representative was made possible thanks to a grant from the President of the Republic of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko. The materials obtained will form the basis for new joint research and educational programs at our university.
